Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan discussed with his US counterpart Marco Rubio on Saturday the latest developments in the region, affirming the importance of continued joint coordination and consultation to support regional security and stability.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that bin Farhan had a phone call with the US Secretary of State.
It explained that during the call, they 'discussed the latest developments and affirmed the importance of continued joint coordination and consultation to achieve security and stability in the region.'
The statement did not provide further details regarding the issues discussed in the call.
This was preceded by a phone call between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and US President Donald Trump, during which they discussed talks between Washington and Tehran.
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), during the call between the two leaders, they 'reviewed cooperation relations between the Kingdom and the United States and ways to support them in several fields, and discussed a number of regional and international issues and exchanged views on them.'
The agency added that the call covered current developments in the region, including talks between the United States and Iran, and that 'the importance of the security of navigation and maritime passages was affirmed, as well as support for all that contributes to achieving security and stability in the region.'
This comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, as the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Thursday it carried out strikes targeting around 90 Iranian military sites, including air defense systems, missile and drone warehouses, naval capabilities, and logistical infrastructure on the Iranian coast.
In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced it targeted US military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, warning it would expand its attacks if US strikes continued.
The Gulf region has been witnessing escalating tensions since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran on February 28.
Since Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18, negotiations between them have continued with mediation by Qatar and Pakistan to reach a final agreement.
