(CNN)-- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi agreed with US President Donald Trump on Monday on imposing fees on commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, then mocked his request to impose a 20% fee, stressing that Iran would be the one to collect the "fair" fees.

Araghchi wrote on platform "X" (formerly Twitter), referring to Trump: "The American president is absolutely right. Everyone who provides safe passage for commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz should be compensated."

Trump had stated that the United States would assume the role of "protector" of the vital waterway, and would impose on commercial shippers a fee of 20% of the value of their shipments to cover the costs of securing the passage.

Araghchi used Trump's language, mocking his tendency to use capital letters, and added: "Iran has always been the protector of the strait, and will remain so forever," and continued: "20% is a very large percentage, of course. We will be fair."
