A school trip turned into a horrific tragedy in eastern Uganda, after at least 21 people died and dozens were injured when a bus carrying students overturned during a school trip in the "Kabshorwa" area, according to Ugandan authorities.

The police said that the accident occurred after the bus suffered a sudden mechanical failure, causing the driver to lose control while driving, veering off the road and crashing into a large rock before overturning, leaving a large number of victims and injured.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported from the police that rescue teams rushed to the scene of the accident, where the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while authorities launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and its exact causes.

The accident triggered a wave of grief in Uganda, amid renewed calls to tighten oversight on the roadworthiness of vehicles used for transporting students and to enhance road safety measures to reduce accidents that claim thousands of lives annually.
