Syria: First Session of People's Assembly Postponed
Syria's Supreme Elections Committee postponed the first session of the People's Assembly, originally set for July 6, to a later date. President Ahmad al-Shar'a issued Decree No. 143 naming members, including the appointed one-third.
Syria's Supreme Elections Committee announced on Sunday the postponement of the first session of the People's Assembly to a date to be determined later.
The Supreme Elections Committee had previously set Monday, July 6, as the date for the first session, at 12:00 noon at the council's headquarters in Damascus. On Wednesday, July 1, President Ahmad al-Shar'a issued Decree No. 143 of 2026, naming the members of the new Syrian People's Assembly, including the one-third complement.
The interim electoral system, issued by presidential decree in 2025, stipulates that the People's Assembly consists of 210 members, two-thirds elected by electoral bodies in constituencies, while the president appoints the remaining third, i.e., 70 members.
