(CNN) -- US President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States agreed to continue talks with Iran, but reiterated that Washington informed Tehran that the ceasefire is no longer in effect.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: 'The Islamic Republic of Iran asked us to continue the 'talks', and we agreed.'
The US president added: 'But the United States made it clear to them, very firmly, that the ceasefire is over.'
The United States launched repeated strikes against Iran this week, after Tehran targeted several vessels in the Strait of Hormuz; however, Trump did not order additional strikes on Thursday.
A diplomat told CNN that Qatari negotiators, in coordination with the United States, traveled to Iran to meet with officials there. A US official had earlier told CNN that the Trump administration's strategy was to strike and then pause military operations, in an effort to avoid further escalation and allow room for continued diplomacy.
