An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck today off the coast of Chiapas state in southern Mexico, prompting authorities to issue warnings of possible tsunami waves, while residents in Guatemala and El Salvador felt the tremor.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the epicenter was near the city of Puerto Madero at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
