The UN Refugee Agency warned that escalating violence in the Lake Chad Basin threatens to widen the displacement crisis and undermine stability efforts in Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger.

The agency reported that 3.5 million people are living in displacement, while 8.2 million people need humanitarian aid, noting that more than 77,000 people have been displaced since the beginning of 2026.

It called for providing $29 million by the end of this year to ensure the continuation of response, protection, and assistance, warning that lack of funding would lead to more displacement and worsen the regional crisis.
