United Nations Warns of Deterioration of Human Rights Situation in Sudan's El Obeid City
Geneva, July 3 (QNA) - UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk warned of a serious deterioration in the human rights situation in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State in Sudan, calling on the international community to act to prevent further violations against civilians.
Turk said during a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva today that civilians have been facing siege-like conditions for about 18 months, amidst an acute shortage of clean water and continued drone attacks.
He explained that the Office has documented patterns of extrajudicial executions, kidnappings, torture, and sexual violence on civilian displacement routes in the Kordofan region, warning of a repeat of the atrocities witnessed in El Fasher, North Darfur, last year.
For its part, the UN Human Rights Office reported that at least 45 civilians were killed and 41 others injured in 15 drone attacks targeting El Obeid and its surroundings between June 6 and 28.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been witnessing an armed conflict that has caused a large-scale humanitarian crisis and led to the displacement of millions of people inside and outside the country.
