The US Central Command announced Wednesday that the US military has begun additional strikes against Iran, aimed at "undermining its ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," hours after President Donald Trump declared that the interim agreement to halt the war with Iran had "ended."
In a statement, the command said the United States holds Iran responsible for what it described as "recent unjustified attacks" on commercial vessels and civilian crews navigating in the vital international waterway.
The statement added that the US military moves are part of protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring the security of ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime passages for global trade.
Meanwhile, a US official said that the ongoing US strikes against Iran are expected to be larger than those carried out on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
Explosions and Projectiles
In contrast, explosions were heard at several locations along the Iranian coast as the United States launched new strikes on Iran on Wednesday night, according to the official IRNA news agency.
IRNA reported hearing warplane roars over Kish Island, and explosions shook the coastal cities of Bandar Abbas, Konarak, and Chabahar, causing power outages in parts of them.
Explosions were also heard in the Sirik area, Bushehr city, and Abu Musa Island, located near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, along with three explosions in Iranshahr city in the southeast of the country.
Meanwhile, Iranian state television reported hearing eight explosions in Bandar Abbas, two projectiles hitting Sirik port, and two projectiles exploding in Jask port.

It is worth noting that the United States launched strikes on more than 80 targets in Iran yesterday, Tuesday, in response to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Then Tehran announced today that it attacked US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, in retaliation for Washington's strikes.
The United States also canceled the temporary lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil following the attacks on ships.
Meanwhile, the two sides exchange accusations of violating the memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 to end the war that began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Earlier Wednesday, the US president said he expects the round of military escalation to end quickly, without ruling out the possibility of further talks between the two sides.
