GCC Secretary General Condemns Houthi Threat to Maritime Navigation

The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassim Al-Budaiwi, on Tuesday condemned the ongoing threat of the Houthi group to maritime navigation and what he described as "false claims against Saudi Arabia and baseless accusations."

Al-Budaiwi affirmed in a statement that the security of maritime navigation and the freedom of international trade are a fundamental pillar for regional and international security and stability, and said that any attempts to target international waterways constitute a clear violation of international law, the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and relevant Security Council resolutions.

Al-Budaiwi considered the Houthi statements issued by their military spokesman as "a pathetic and blatant attempt to distort facts and evade responsibility for the practices adopted by the group, which have contributed to deepening the suffering of the Yemeni people and threatening the security and stability of the region."

Al-Budaiwi said: "These irresponsible statements will not change the established facts, foremost among them Saudi Arabia's sincere efforts to support the Yemeni people, contribute to achieving security and stability, advance the political solution path, and provide humanitarian and relief aid, stemming from its responsibility towards Yemen and its people," according to a statement by the GCC General Secretariat.

The Secretary-General called on the international community to "take a firm stance against these false Houthi claims and threats, and work to implement Security Council resolutions, to ensure the protection of maritime navigation and prevent any practices that endanger the security of international sea lanes."

He reiterated the GCC's full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its support for all measures it takes to protect its security, sovereignty, and safeguard its interests.

Saudi Arabia yesterday condemned the accusations made by a Houthi spokesman against the Kingdom of imposing a blockade on the Yemeni people and threats to ban maritime navigation on the Kingdom, and affirmed that it will take all necessary measures to protect its ships in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
