The Saudi government has granted Acwa Power, a company operating in energy and water desalination, an exclusive right to export locally produced green hydrogen and its derivatives to global markets, enhancing the Kingdom's transformation into a global hub for clean fuel production and export.

The company said in a statement on Tadawul that the government approval includes granting it an exclusive right to export green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green ammonia, green methanol, green methane, and fuels produced using green hydrogen, in line with national targets.

Acwa Power is the largest energy and water desalination company in the Middle East, with a project portfolio in renewable energy and green hydrogen across 15 countries, with assets valued at $124.4 billion and a production capacity of 97.9 GW, more than half of which comes from renewable sources.

Saudi Arabia is preparing to invest billions of dollars in the hydrogen sector in the coming years, as part of its plans to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on oil revenues, while maintaining its position as a global energy supplier.

The approval also included assigning Acwa Power to develop projects for the production, transmission, and export of electricity generated from renewable energy sources to European markets and Arab countries. The company said it will later disclose any material developments or financial impacts related to this assignment.

The approval comes amid accelerating global demand for clean energy, and as the Kingdom seeks to leverage its competitive advantage in renewable energy resources and convert them into sustainable export returns in the long term.

The approval supports the Kingdom's strategic goals aimed at establishing its position as a global center for clean energy export and accelerating the development of a diversified, low-emission economy in line with Vision 2030 targets.

The CEO of Acwa Power, Samir Sarhan, said: 'Exporting green hydrogen and electricity generated from renewable energy sources represents the next phase in the Kingdom's leadership in the energy sector, opening new horizons for economic growth, contributing to global energy security, and supporting energy transition efforts.'

Acwa's current portfolio includes 111 assets in operation, under development, or under construction across 16 countries, with total managed assets of SAR 468.9 billion ($125 billion), reflecting a scope and scale of projects unmatched by only a few private sector developers globally.

Dr. Samir Sarhan added: 'We look forward to working closely with government entities, strategic partners, and international stakeholders to develop an integrated export infrastructure that connects the Kingdom's abundant renewable energy resources with the growing global demand for clean electricity.'

Saudi Arabia is home to the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project, developed by NEOM in partnership with Air Products and Acwa Power, and is one of the largest green hydrogen projects under construction in the world.

The project is expected to produce about 600 tons per day of carbon-free hydrogen by the end of 2026, with total investments amounting to $8.4 billion.

It is worth noting that the Public Investment Fund established Energy Solutions Company to finance green hydrogen projects in 2024, with plans to invest at least $10 billion.
