Data released by the International Aluminium Institute on Monday showed that global production fell in June by 1.5 percent year-on-year to 5.98 million tons, with production from the Gulf region dropping by a third.

Two smelters in the Gulf region, which accounts for about nine percent of global aluminum production capacity, were subjected to a blatant Iranian attack in late March as part of the ongoing war in the Middle East, preventing them from shipping to export markets via normal channels.

The institute said Gulf production reached 332,000 tons in June, down from 507,000 tons a year earlier.

On a daily basis, the region's production stabilized at 11,000 tons compared to May, but it remains below the pre-war baseline of 17,800 tons.

Emirates Global Aluminium announced this month that it is resuming production at its Al Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi at a faster pace than expected after its emergency shutdown in March, but indicated that a return to previous levels may take a full year.

Globally, the institute said average daily aluminum production last month reached 199,300 tons, up 0.3 percent from May, which had an extra day counted.
