"Kansas City" transports 140,000 fans during World Cup and earns $653 million
The US city of Kansas City announced the success of its first-of-its-kind regional transportation plan, having transported more than 140,000 passengers through Kansas City and the metro area during its hosting of five matches in the World Cup finals. The city, located on the border between Missouri and Kansas, estimated its revenues at over $653 million, according to official data released by the local organizing committee.
Official statistics published by The Kansas City Star showed that the direct bus system to Kansas City Stadium was the most used, transporting 88,771 passengers, with 18,900 travelers on June 16, 21,500 on June 20, 22,052 on June 25, and 25,500 on June 27.
The city's stadium, which seats 69,045 fans, hosted matches: Argentina vs. Algeria (3-0), Ecuador vs. Curacao (0-0), Tunisia vs. Netherlands (1-3), Algeria vs. Austria (3-3) in the group stage, and Colombia vs. Ghana (1-0) in the knockout rounds. It will also host a quarterfinal match on July 11.
The city confirmed that direct regional connector buses came in second, used by 34,037 passengers for travel between various key destinations in the metro area, such as Lenexa City Market, Kansas City Zoo, and various centers, while direct airport buses transported 19,214 passengers during the World Cup period up to yesterday.
City data also showed that fans from the local and regional levels constituted 31% of total passengers, while fans from within the United States (national level) accounted for 56%, and international fans made up 13%.
The city, in the news published in The Kansas City Star, confirmed that this integration of its services effectively connected fans to matches, celebrations, and various destinations, proving the complete success of the innovative transportation plan witnessed in the region.
Kansas City is considered the smallest US city among the 11 host cities for the tournament, and it made a major surprise by being chosen as the main base and camp for three of the world's strongest national teams: Argentina, England, and the Netherlands.
