Gasoline gallon in US exceeds $4 amid supply disruption

The price of a gallon of gasoline in the United States exceeded $4 on Monday, affected by the global rise in energy prices due to damaged supplies, as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed amid the US-Iran escalation.

Data from the American Automobile Association (AAA) showed that the average price of a gallon of gasoline (3.7 liters) rose to $4.176, compared to $2.98 before the outbreak of the war on Iran, an increase of nearly 40 percent.

Gas prices had fallen below $4 in mid-June, after a ceasefire agreement was reached between Washington and Tehran, before rising again with renewed tensions.

This rise comes as global energy markets are affected by escalating conflicts in the Middle East and growing concerns about the safety of oil supplies, especially with threats to shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important strategic corridors for energy transport in the world.

Global markets are experiencing volatility as a result of the repercussions of the US war on Iran, which is putting upward pressure on oil prices and inflation rates.

For more than a week, Iran has been carrying out attacks targeting what it describes as US military installations in several Arab countries, including Kuwait and Bahrain, in response to ongoing US strikes inside its territory, and has announced the re-closure of the strait amid the escalation.

On July 8, US President Donald Trump announced the end of the ceasefire stipulated in the memorandum of understanding signed with Tehran on June 18.

This announcement came after Iran targeted three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, at a time when Tehran asserts its intention to impose a mechanism to regulate ship passage through the corridor, while Washington demands guaranteed freedom of navigation and its security.

The escalation has disrupted navigation in the strait, threatening energy supplies and air traffic, amid intermittent closures of airspace and warnings of targeting US facilities and interests outside the Middle East region.
