Data released by the International Aluminum Institute on Monday showed that global production fell 1.5% year-on-year to 5.98 million tons in June, with output from the Gulf region falling by a third.

Two smelters in the Gulf region, which accounts for about 9% of global aluminum production capacity, were attacked by Iran in late March as part of the ongoing war in the Middle East, preventing them from shipping to export markets through usual channels.

The institute said Gulf output was 332,000 tons in June, down from 507,000 tons a year earlier.

On a daily basis, the region's output stabilized at 11,000 tons compared to May, but remains below the pre-war baseline of 17,800 tons.

Emirates Global Aluminium announced this month that it was resuming production at its Al Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi at a faster-than-expected pace after an emergency shutdown in March, but indicated that returning to previous levels could take a full year.

Globally, the institute said average daily aluminum output last month was 199,300 tons, up 0.3% from May, which had an extra day counted.
