Israeli strikes and fire kill 5 Palestinians in Gaza, including 9-year-old girl
Officials at the Gaza Health Ministry said Israel killed at least five people, including a nine-year-old girl, in an airstrike and gunfire in the coastal enclave on Sunday.
Medics reported that Israeli fire targeted a camp on the eastern side of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, killing the girl, Tala Abu Matar (9 years old).
Another strike targeting a workshop in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City killed four people. Witnesses said three Israeli missiles hit the location.
The ceasefire reached in October may have ended large-scale combat operations, but it has failed to stop Israeli attacks that have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians since it took effect.
This new escalation comes as leaders of the Hamas movement visit Cairo for a new round of talks on implementing the second phase of US President Donald Trump's plan for Gaza.
Sources familiar with the talks said the discussions include disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of the Israeli army, noting that no progress has been made so far.
About two million Palestinians currently live in a narrow coastal strip controlled by Hamas, most of them in temporary tents or war-damaged buildings. Displaced people, many of whom have been forced to flee multiple times, constitute the vast majority of this number.
