France striker Kylian Mbappé said he understands that some believe there was a 'show' during the match against England after 10 goals were scored to decide the bronze medal of the 2026 World Cup.

France lost 6-4 to England on Saturday evening, before Argentina played against Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday evening.

France trailed 4-0 in the first half, then reduced the deficit by scoring 3 goals, before England sealed the victory with two goals in the final minutes.

Mbappé told the media: 'There were two different halves. In the first half, I understand some people saying it was a show, and that we did not respect the team shirt. I say we are human after all.'

He added: 'Unfortunately, we were completely shocked. They really woke us up. In the second half, we came back as top-class players... we managed to do what we do, winning the second half, but in the end, we did not win.'

Mbappé continued: 'It is more disappointing for the coach. We wanted to do something for him, but unfortunately, the first half gave the impression that we let him down. But that is not what we wanted to feel. This is football; we want to thank the coach for everything he has done. This match will not tarnish Didier Deschamps' legend.'

Deschamps played his last match with France after spending 14 years in the position, with Zinedine Zidane close to taking over the responsibility in the coming period.

What did the all-time top scorer of the World Cup say about Messi?

Mbappé scored two goals at the start of the second half, to take the lead in the 2026 World Cup scoring chart with 10 goals, two ahead of Argentina captain Lionel Messi.

Mbappé also claimed the title of 'all-time top scorer' of the World Cup with 22 goals, just one ahead of Messi, who has the chance to reclaim the title when he plays his last World Cup match against Spain.

Mbappé said: 'Messi will score, that is certain. I am just trying to help my team win. When you score many goals in the World Cup, it helps you develop in certain ways.'

The Real Madrid striker added: 'I would have preferred not to become the all-time top scorer and to play the match tomorrow. It is true that this is an achievement for me, but it is not the first thing on my mind today.'
