Morocco signs agreement to participate in international stabilization force in Gaza
Morocco announced on Wednesday its participation in the international stabilization force in Gaza, during a meeting between Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Minister Delegate for National Defense Administration Abdellatif Loudiyi with the High Representative of the Gaza Peace Council, Nikolay Mladenov, during his visit to the kingdom, according to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP).
The agency reported that the meeting witnessed the signing of an agreement regulating Morocco's participation in the force, including the deployment of officers from the Royal Armed Forces and elements from the Royal Gendarmerie and National Security, in addition to establishing a field military hospital.
According to a statement from the National Defense Administration, the agreement came during a visit by a delegation of the Gaza Peace Council, within the framework of Morocco's commitments as a founding member of the council, and in implementation of the directives of Moroccan King Mohammed VI.
The Moroccan side affirmed that the participation aims to support efforts to establish peace and security in the Middle East, reflecting the kingdom's commitment to the values of peace and international cooperation.
The Gaza Peace Council and the International Stabilization Force welcomed the Moroccan contribution, which includes deploying officers from the Royal Armed Forces and elements from the gendarmerie and national security, in addition to establishing a field military hospital in the sector.
Last February, the commander of the International Stabilization Force in Gaza, Major General Jasper Jeffers, announced the commitment of 5 countries to send forces to the Palestinian territory.
Jeffers added in a speech at the first meeting of the Peace Council in Washington that 'the first five countries that pledged to send forces to work within the International Stabilization Force are Indonesia, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, and Albania. Two countries also pledged to train police personnel: Egypt and Jordan.'
Jeffers indicated that the International Stabilization Force will begin deploying in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip and training the police there, then 'expand sector by sector.'
He continued by saying that the long-term plan is to involve 20,000 soldiers from the International Stabilization Force and train 12,000 police officers.
The UN Security Council adopted last November a resolution submitted by the United States authorizing the establishment of 'an international temporary stabilization force in the Gaza Strip,' after 13 members voted in favor and Russia and China abstained.
According to the text of Resolution No. 2803, 'it authorizes member states working with the Peace Council and the council itself to establish an International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gaza, deployed under a unified command acceptable to the Peace Council, with contributions from participating countries, in close consultation and cooperation with Egypt and Israel.'
