Omani Proposal for Strait of Hormuz: Fees on Services, Not on Transit
12 July 2026 09:09
In an attempt to overcome one of the most complex points of contention between Washington and Tehran, the Sultanate of Oman has proposed a new approach to managing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz based on the Malacca Strait model. The proposal involves imposing contributions or fees for navigational services provided to ships, such as pilotage, towing, and navigation monitoring, without imposing any fees on the right of transit, in compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and preserving the freedom of international navigation.
