Centrica, the owner of British Gas, said it plans to cut another 800 jobs in addition to 500 jobs it announced last month as part of efforts to restructure customer service and support teams.

The energy company added that the process of cutting nearly 1,300 jobs is already underway and will take two years.

The proposals include cutting about 500 customer-facing roles in customer service operations, in addition to further cuts to external support roles handled by third parties, according to the German news agency dpa.

The job cuts will result in a reduction of approximately 14% in the company's customer service staff.

The restructuring comes in response to structural changes in consumer behavior, as average consumer calls have fallen by 20% year-on-year, and about 90% use digital means for support, according to Centrica.
