Report: Israel Told US About Iranian Plot to Assassinate Trump
The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that Israel shared new intelligence with the United States indicating a fresh Iranian plot to assassinate US President Donald Trump, in a development that could mark a new escalation in the confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
The newspaper reported that Iran has openly vowed for years to take revenge on Trump for his decision during his first term to kill Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
The Israeli embassy in Washington declined to comment, while the Iranian mission to the United Nations did not respond to a request for comment. The White House referred the newspaper to statements made by Trump on Wednesday.
Trump and the Iranian assassination list
Trump addressed the threats targeting his life during his remarks to reporters in Ankara, saying he considers himself 'number one on the Iranian assassination list.'
He added: 'I'm on all their lists. I saw this morning that I'm on every single one of their lists. So far, I think I've been a bit lucky, but maybe that won't last long.'
The newspaper noted that relations between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have seen tension in recent weeks as their positions regarding the continuation of the war with Iran diverge.
It reported that Netanyahu is pushing to continue attacks on Iran and achieve more military objectives, while Trump seeks a way out of the conflict, fearing that its continuation could harm the global economy, after a fragile ceasefire was reached between the US and Iran last month.
It added that Trump and Netanyahu held a phone call on Thursday, according to the Israeli Prime Minister's office, which said the two sides agreed to continue 'coordination between the two countries,' and Trump briefed Netanyahu on the latest US activities in the Gulf region.
The report noted that mourners during the funeral of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei chanted slogans calling for killing Trump, and also raised a banner that read: 'We will kill Trump.'
The newspaper added that Trump and Netanyahu were in frequent contact at the beginning of the war with Iran, with the Israeli prime minister briefing the US president during late-night phone calls on Israeli military targets and intelligence.
However, according to the report, the communications continued later, but the relationship between them began to show signs of tension during a series of charged phone calls.
