Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, stressed on Tuesday the necessity of Iran's full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

He added, during the general debate of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), that the treaty is a 'fundamental pillar' of the non-proliferation regime, emphasizing the need for full implementation of its provisions and achieving balance among its three pillars: non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Al-Wasil stressed the commitment of nuclear-weapon states to their disarmament pledges, stating that 'the only guarantee against the use of these weapons is their complete and final elimination.'

He affirmed the inherent right of states parties to peaceful uses of nuclear energy in accordance with the treaty's provisions and without imposing additional restrictions, which enhances transparency and cooperation with the IAEA.

He referred to what he described as 'Iranian attacks' targeting civilians and civilian objects in the Kingdom, noting that they have been internationally condemned under UN Security Council Resolution 2817 of 2026.

He emphasized the importance of enhancing regional security and respecting the principles of good neighborliness and non-interference in internal affairs, and the necessity of Iran's full cooperation with the IAEA to ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

He stressed that ridding the Middle East of nuclear weapons is a 'collective international responsibility,' especially for the sponsoring states of the 1995 resolution, adding that Israel's continued refusal to join the treaty is a 'major obstacle' to establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction.
