Political sources told Al-Sharq that the Quintet mechanism concerned with the Sudanese file intends to hold a meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa during the current month of July, with the participation of a number of Sudanese political forces, to discuss developments in the war and the latest political situation in the country.

The sources said that the meeting comes within the framework of moves led by the mechanism to push efforts to end the conflict, by listening to the visions of Sudanese political forces, and discussing ways to reach a ceasefire, and preparing the conditions for resuming the political process.

It added that invitations were sent to the Democratic Civil Alliance for Revolutionary Forces (Sumoud), the Coordination of National Forces, the Popular Congress Party, the Democratic Bloc, and the Umma Party, led by Mubarak al-Fadil.

The sources explained that the meeting aims to discuss opportunities to reach a common vision on the future of the political process, and to discuss mechanisms to support peace efforts, in a way that contributes to stopping the war.

The Quintet mechanism includes the United Nations, the European Union, the League of Arab States, the African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development in East Africa (IGAD), and has been working for months to bring the views of the Sudanese parties closer, and to support efforts to stop the war and resume the political process.

The war broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in mid-April 2023, after a power struggle during a transitional period that was supposed to lead to elections for a transition to civilian rule.
