Syrian President meets IAEA Director General in Damascus
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa received the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, at the People's Palace in the capital Damascus on Tuesday, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
The meeting was attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and Head of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission Muthar al-Aklah.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission inaugurated the Brachytherapy system, dedicated to destroying cancer cells and shrinking tumors, at Al-Biruni Hospital in the Al-Mouassat Medical Complex in Damascus, in a step aimed at developing radiotherapy services for cancer patients and enhancing support for the health sector and scientific research, according to SANA.

Damascus opened these projects in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
In June 2025, Syria signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Atomic Energy Agency on cooperation in the field of food security and cancer control, through the agency's 'Atoms for Food' and 'Rays of Hope' initiatives.
Grossi said at the time that the agency would begin 'exploring opportunities for the use of nuclear energy in Syria,' noting that al-Sharaa revealed to him an 'ambitious program for the International Atomic Energy Agency to support Syria with medical equipment and training for hospitals, and to provide assistance in the fields of agriculture and water management.'
Syria has lost a large number of its energy and electricity sector facilities since the outbreak of unrest in 2011 until the fall of the Assad regime.
