Trump Officially Notifies Congress of Resumption of War with Iran
Donald Trump, US President
US President Donald Trump formally notified Congress last week that the United States has resumed military operations against Iran, granting the Pentagon an additional 60-day deadline to use military force in the region without needing Congressional approval.
Trump told lawmakers in a two-page letter sent last Friday that US strikes against Iran resumed on July 7, in accordance with the War Powers Resolution, which requires the president to notify Congress within two days of any military action abroad.
The president explained in his letter that US ground forces are not involved in these strikes, describing them as limited, deliberate, planned, and executed in a manner aimed at minimizing civilian casualties to the greatest extent possible.
Under the War Powers Resolution, US forces are allowed to continue these operations for 60 days after notifying Congress, with the possibility of a 30-day extension. Any military deployment beyond that period requires Congressional approval.
