Ukraine said it targeted an oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region, located far from the border between the two countries, along with a number of oil tankers in the Sea of Azov, in the latest series of attacks targeting ships and energy infrastructure in Russia.

The Ukrainian General Staff announced in a statement on the Telegram app on Sunday that its forces targeted the Syzran oil refinery, causing a fire at the facility, noting that the extent of damage at the refinery located inside Russian territory is still being assessed.

It added that Ukrainian forces also attacked 10 oil tankers and four ferries in the Sea of Azov.

For his part, the governor of Russia’s Rostov region, Yuri Slyusar, said via Telegram that an empty oil tanker was damaged in a drone attack, explaining that the fire was brought under control and no injuries were reported.

Bloomberg was unable to independently verify the number of ships attacked.

In response, the Russian Defense Ministry said its forces intercepted 349 Ukrainian drones overnight over several regions, including the Samara region and the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed, as well as the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

The governor of the Samara region, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, said via Telegram that the attacks resulted in one person killed and three others injured.

Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian energy infrastructure in recent months, targeting oil refineries, fuel depots, and petroleum product tankers, in an attempt to reduce supplies and pressure the Kremlin to enter negotiations to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, now in its fifth year. These attacks have caused disruptions in fuel supplies, prompting Russian authorities to ban exports of most types of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

Mutual Ukrainian and Russian strikes

Russia said that Ukraine attacked four ships using drones overnight and into Saturday morning in the Gulf of Taganrog in the Sea of Azov. This followed a strike carried out on Friday in the same region, which disrupted navigation along one of Russia’s main grain export corridors.

Ukraine had announced last May that it targeted the Syzran refinery, owned by Rosneft, located about 760 kilometers (470 miles) from Moscow.

In response, the Russian Defense Ministry said its forces targeted port facilities in the cities of Odesa and Chornomorsk on the Black Sea coast in Ukraine’s Odesa region, as well as naval vessels.

The Ukrainian General Staff announced that it shot down 7 out of 9 Kh-59/69 missiles, along with 95 out of 115 drones launched by Russia. It added that Russian forces also launched four Kh-31 anti-radar missiles, but they did not hit their targets.
