What Have Banks Contributed to the Nation? - Othman bin Hamad Aba Al-Khail
The article questions the role of banks in Saudi society, arguing that despite their massive profits, their contributions to social responsibility and national development initiatives under Vision 2030 remain insufficient compared to their financial gains.
The combined profits of banks listed on the 'Tadawul' stock exchange reached 92.5 billion riyals by the end of 2025. While the details of these profits vary from one bank to another, they generally agree that current accounts play a significant role in their profit margins. Banks invest the funds held in current accounts without providing any interest to customers, citing religious compliance, yet these same returns are considered permissible for the banks themselves—effectively acting as free profit. Certainly, other percentages of bank profits are derived from personal loans, mortgages, corporate loans, and various types of deposits.
One must ask: what have some of these banks actually contributed to the nation and its citizens? This question requires an answer from the highest-ranking officials within the banks' organizational structures. Have they directed even a small portion of their profits toward humanitarian efforts, social responsibility programs, or interest-free housing loans? Do they play an active role in serving society, cooperative associations, health centers, and people with disabilities? Where are they in the public squares of our cities that bear their names? Where are they in building schools? There are countless opportunities to give back to this beloved nation. Social responsibility programs in most banks do not measure up to that grand title; what they provide are merely amounts in the range of hundreds of thousands of riyals, perhaps slightly more.
What is the role of banks in contributing to the realization of Saudi Vision 2030, and what are the pillars of this role? Is there a unified agreement among all banks, or does each bank view Vision 2030 from a different perspective?

The nation has given and continues to give much to these banks, and now it is their time to give back without limits. The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) plays an active and vital role in realizing Vision 2030; it is striving to develop the financial sector to be diverse and effective in supporting the development of the national economy, in addition to supporting and employing women in the banking sector, where they have begun to find their place in this vital and important field.
Is what the banks currently provide to society truly sufficient, or is more required of them? They have offered only a little so far. I am left bewildered and questioning when I hear or read the astronomical figures these banks profit. Does the nation not deserve a percentage of those profits?
Banks that have not yet established a general department for social responsibility, linked to the highest authority in their organizational structure, should do so in its comprehensive framework. As for those that already have, this is simply part of their duty to the nation. I suggest that 5% of the previous year's profits be allocated as a future budget to contribute to national projects. Undoubtedly, this requires board approval, and I do not believe any board would vote against it, as the goal is to contribute to development, advancement, and strengthening the bank's role in society and the nation.
May God protect our beloved country from all harm and perpetuate upon us the blessings of security, faith, and safety.
