The deaf American actress Kaylee Hottle, known for her role as the girl Jia in the films "Godzilla vs. Kong" and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire", died at age 18 following a car accident in the US state of Maryland.

Hottle was a passenger in a car that veered off the road and crashed into a drainage culvert near Ijamsville in the early hours of Tuesday. She was airlifted to hospital but died during transport, according to local authorities and her father, Joshua Hottle.

Her father confirmed her death in a video recorded in American Sign Language.

Who is Kaylee Hottle?

Kaylee Hottle was born in 2007 and grew up in a deaf family, with a four-generation history of deafness on her father's side.

American Sign Language was her first language; it was not just a means of communication for her, but an essential part of her identity and daily life.

In a previous interview, she said her parents and sisters were the people she looked up to most and took as role models.

Hottle appeared on camera from childhood in advertisements and awareness videos aimed at the deaf community, before landing her first major film role at about age thirteen.

In 2021, she made her debut in "Godzilla vs. Kong", portraying Jia, a deaf girl from Skull Island who forms a close bond with Kong and communicates with him using sign language.

Although the film is set in a world dominated by giant monsters, battles, and explosions, the silent relationship between Jia and Kong became one of its most human elements; the girl was able to understand Kong's feelings, calm him, and communicate with him in a way others could not.

Off set, Hottle was studying at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, in her final year, and participating in school sports activities.

The school, in a statement mourning her, said her death left a deep impact on her family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew her, announcing the provision of counseling and psychological support services for students and staff affected by her passing.

How did the accident happen?

The accident occurred at approximately 2:52 AM on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, on Windsor Road in the Ijamsville area of Maryland.

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office said Hottle was a passenger in a 1995 Honda Accord driven by a 19-year-old man from Frederick.

According to preliminary investigation results, the car exited the right side of the road and hit a drainage culvert. Hottle was taken to a specialized trauma center before later being pronounced dead.

Police added that excessive speed is believed to have been a contributing factor, but did not determine a final cause. The accident remains under investigation by the traffic unit, and authorities have not filed any charges against the driver.

The driver was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, while the other passenger refused treatment at the scene.

Police did not clarify whether the car occupants were wearing seat belts.

During preparation for the film in 2018, the casting team searched for a deaf girl to play Jia. The team came across Kaylee Hottle after an assistant director saw her in an ad for a communication service for the deaf and recommended her for an audition.

After passing the audition, she got the role at around age eleven and participated in filming in Hawaii and Australia, her first feature film experience.

Director Adam Wingard said in previous interviews that Hottle had a natural presence on camera, and her ability to express through her face and movements allowed her to convey emotions without relying on spoken dialogue.

Several of her co-stars also learned some basics of American Sign Language to communicate with her during filming, including actress Rebecca Hall, who played Dr. Ilene Andrews, Jia's adoptive mother in the film, and actor Alexander Skarsgård.

After the success of the first film, Hottle returned to portray the same character in "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire", released in 2024, where Jia had a larger role in the events.

In the sequel, Jia was no longer just a link between Kong and humans; her story also became tied to her identity, feelings of isolation, and attempt to find a place to belong.

Hottle was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor for her performance, an indication of the attention her acting received despite her short career.

Rare deaf representation in Hollywood

Hottle's appearance in a major franchise like "Godzilla" was a notable step for deaf actors in commercial cinema, especially since her character was not portrayed as having a problem that needs treatment or a cause for pity.

Her presence was not limited to acting; she was also known for advocating for the deaf community, using her fame to promote the presence of deaf actors in Hollywood.

Sign language appeared in both films as a complete and effective language, enabling Jia to build a unique connection with Kong, and even to play a key role in saving other characters and driving the plot forward.

Hottle had spoken in interviews about the importance of deaf children seeing people like themselves on screen, saying that the presence of deaf characters in cinema could help them feel that their dreams are not out of reach or impossible.

She also stressed that deaf actors do not need someone to speak on their behalf, but rather real opportunities that allow them to present their own experiences.

In addition to the "Godzilla" films, Hottle appeared in an episode of the American series "Magnum P.I.", and was set to star in an upcoming film titled "What Doesn't Kill Us", a step that indicated the beginning of her career expanding beyond the character of Jia.
