A surgical team at Qassim University Medical City successfully performed a precise and complex surgery to remove a tumor inside the spinal cord of a 26-year-old female patient who suffered from severe weakness in both lower limbs accompanied by sensory disturbances after being diagnosed with a tumor compressing the spinal cord at the level of the tenth thoracic vertebra (T10). Necessary clinical and radiological examinations were conducted upon her admission, confirming the presence of an intraspinal tumor causing direct pressure on neural tissues, requiring urgent surgical intervention to avoid neurological deterioration that could lead to loss of mobility or paralysis. The medical team, led by Dr. Abdullah Faisal Al-Khamees, Consultant Neurosurgery, and anesthesiologist Dr. Rasha Zaidan, successfully performed the surgery using a surgical microscope and precise techniques, along with intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM), a modern advanced technique that enables real-time monitoring of nerve functions and reduces the likelihood of neurological complications during surgery. The procedure involved a precise surgical opening of the spine and removal of part of the bone to access the spinal cord, followed by careful removal of the tumor while preserving the surrounding neural tissues due to the sensitivity and precision of the intervention. This operation is considered highly precise and high-risk given the tumor's direct attachment to the spinal cord, and it was, praise be to God, successful, as the patient showed improvement and stability in her health condition and was discharged home on the third day after surgery.
