Dr. Suleiman Al-Habib Hospital in Al-Mohammadiyah, Jeddah, launches specialized clinic for early detection of lung cancer
As part of its continuous efforts to develop medical services and provide integrated preventive healthcare, Dr. Suleiman Al-Habib Hospital in Al-Mohammadiyah, Jeddah, has launched a specialized clinic for early detection of lung tumors, marking a significant addition to preventive medicine mechanisms. Dr. Ashraf Maghrabi, consultant thoracic surgeon at the hospital, said that this specialized clinic is equipped to provide services according to the highest quality standards, staffed by a team of experienced medical professionals and specialized support personnel, and equipped with the latest globally approved medical technologies for early diagnosis, including the latest low-dose CT scanners (LDCT).
Dr. Maghrabi said that the clinic's launch is part of efforts to launch an early lung tumor detection program, noting that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. He attributed the high mortality rate to the fact that over 80% of cases are diagnosed at stage four, because the disease often grows silently with no symptoms until advanced stages, often after the tumor has already spread to other parts of the body, making treatment difficult. In contrast, survival rates can reach 80-90% if diagnosed early, highlighting the importance of early detection.
Dr. Maghrabi added that there are groups at higher risk of the disease, including those aged 50 years or older, and smokers for 20 years or more, covering all types of smoking such as traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and hookah. Therefore, medical advice urges them to undergo early screening.
He continued by saying that early-stage lung cancer screening using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is the best procedure, as it is highly accurate and fast in detecting cancerous masses, no matter how small. This enables early treatment, provides significant chances of recovery and improved quality of life, and greatly reduces mortality rates.
He concluded by confirming that the clinic has started receiving visitors and securing examination appointments through approved digital platforms.
