The Japanese website 'Matcha Direct' explained that it is extracted from the butterfly pea flower and features a striking sky-blue color thanks to the pigment 'ternatin'.
It may be quite similar to 'green matcha' in that it contains high levels of antioxidants, particularly polyphenol compounds.
But the most important feature of 'blue matcha' is that it is caffeine-free, making it a suitable choice for those who want to avoid stimulants.
What about its benefits?
Despite limited human studies on butterfly pea flower extracts, its antioxidant compounds are believed to contribute to the following:
Supporting eye health
Supporting skin health
Contributing to weight management
As for the uses of this plant, they date back centuries in Thailand and include:
Producing natural food colors
Coloring desserts with its juice
Preparing a traditional drink from its dried flowers
Not only that, but butterfly pea flower has also been incorporated into some preparations, such as shampoos aimed at promoting hair growth.
