Study: Type of vegetables beneficial for heart differs between men and women
A recent scientific study indicates that the benefits of vegetables for heart health may differ between men and women, opening the door for more precise dietary recommendations that take into account the biological differences between the sexes.
Researchers from Australia conducted an analysis of the dietary patterns of more than 600 young men and women, revealing clear differences in the impact of various types of vegetables on cardiovascular health indicators.
The results of the study were published in the journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases, showing that men who consumed larger amounts of legumes, such as beans, lentils, and peas, were less likely to exhibit early signs of heart disease, which include high blood pressure, increased waist circumference, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and elevated blood sugar.
In contrast, women benefited most from consuming cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, as their intake was associated with lower early risk indicators for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
The researchers noted that consuming one serving per day of the appropriate type of vegetables was linked to a significant reduction in health risks, even among individuals in their early twenties.
Researcher Therese O'Sullivan from the Institute for Nutrition and Health Innovation at Edith Cowan University in Australia explained that the results suggest that men and women may differ in how they metabolize certain nutrients and phytochemicals found in vegetables.
She added that the compounds found in legumes may have a greater impact on testosterone levels in men, while the compounds in cruciferous vegetables may more significantly affect female hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.
The researchers emphasized that these findings still require further studies for confirmation, but they pointed out that legumes and cruciferous vegetables are economical dietary choices that can easily be added to the daily diet, potentially contributing to improved heart health and the prevention of chronic diseases.
