Two Brain-Dead Donors Give Seven Recipients a Chance at Life Through Organ Donation in Al-Ahsa

Two brain-dead individuals at King Fahd Hospital in Al-Hofuf - part of the Al-Ahsa Health Cluster - helped save the lives of seven recipients and end their organ failure suffering, after their families agreed to donate organs, in a humanitarian gesture that embodies the values of giving and altruism in Saudi society, and underscores the great impact of organ donation programs in giving patients new chances at life. The Al-Ahsa Health Cluster explained that the organ donation team at King Fahd Hospital in Al-Hofuf handled the two cases immediately after brain death was confirmed according to the approved national protocol, and completed all related medical and regulatory procedures in coordination with the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation. The cluster stated that the specialized staff worked to educate the families of the deceased about the importance of organ donation and its humanitarian impact, and both families agreed to donate, which helped save a number of recipients who were waiting for a chance to undergo transplant operations. In detail, a Saudi medical team successfully removed and transplanted two kidneys: the left kidney was transplanted into an 82-year-old patient, while the right kidney was transplanted into a 71-year-old patient, and both operations were successful. Meanwhile, a heart transplant was successfully performed on a 4-year-old girl, and a lung transplant on a 51-year-old patient. A liver was transplanted into a 68-year-old recipient, the left kidney was transplanted into a 68-year-old recipient, and the right kidney into a 64-year-old patient, with all transplant operations proving successful. This achievement is part of the Al-Ahsa Health Cluster's ongoing efforts to promote a culture of organ donation and raise community awareness of the importance of this humanitarian work, within the Saudi healthcare model for organ donation pathways, helping improve the quality of life for patients with end-stage organ failure. For its part, the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation praised the efforts of the Al-Ahsa Health Cluster and its excellence in managing organ donation cases, appreciating the integrated work of the medical, nursing, and technical teams at King Fahd Hospital in Al-Hofuf, including intensive care units, neurology, neurosurgery, cardiac catheterization, radiology, laboratories, operating rooms, and support departments. The center emphasized that these efforts reflect the health system's commitment to alleviating patients' suffering and giving them new hope in life, noting that this success embodies the level of integration among health entities in the Kingdom, and the vital role of organ donation programs in enhancing the sustainability of health services, and contributing to achieving the goals of the Health Sector Transformation Program and Saudi Vision 2030, improving quality of life and providing greater treatment opportunities.
