WHO Warns Cancer Cases Could Reach 35 Million Annually by 2026 Without Urgent Action
The World Health Organization announced on Wednesday that the number of new cancer cases diagnosed annually worldwide could rise to 35 million, compared to 20.6 million in 2024, unless countries take urgent action.
The World Health Organization's Global Cancer Status Report for 2026 stated that 92% of the world's population will be affected by cancer at some point in their lives, either personally or through the diagnosis of a close family member.
The report highlights stark disparities in cancer detection and treatment worldwide. According to the WHO, the survival rate for breast cancer patients reaches 85% in wealthy countries, compared to only about 40% in poorer nations. Moreover, access to at least minimal treatment is only available in 39% of countries, according to the German Press Agency (dpa).
WHO expert André Ilbawi said that many discussions currently focus on new technologies, innovative treatment options, and promising hopes, but added: "However, this is not the reality for many people around the world," whom he said "are still being left behind."
