Mount Hira... The Mountain of the Quran, Site of the First Revelation and Launchpad of the Prophetic Mission
Mount Hira is one of the most prominent religious landmarks in Mecca, located northeast of the city, and also known as Jabal al-Nur. Its significance stems from housing the Cave of Hira, which witnessed the beginning of the revelation to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Aisha, Mother of the Believers, narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari that the first form of revelation to the Messenger of Allah was true dreams in sleep; he never saw a dream but it came like the dawn of the morning. Then he came to love seclusion, so he would stay alone in the Cave of Hira, engaging in worship ("tahannuth") for many nights, taking provisions for that. Then he would return to Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her) and take provisions for a similar period until the truth came to him while he was in the Cave of Hira. The angel came to him and said, 'Read.'
The mountain rises about 634 meters above sea level, and its cave is located at the top with a small space that can only accommodate a limited number of people. It was a place of worship for the Prophet (peace be upon him) before the mission. Today, the mountain is one of the most prominent sites attracting visitors and those interested in the Prophet's biography, due to its spiritual and historical significance, as it represents the starting point of the message of monotheism and a witness to a pivotal stage in the history of Islam.
