48.4 Million Cubic Meters of Sand Removed from Road Right-of-Way in 2025
Coinciding with the World Day to Combat Sand and Dust Storms, which falls on July 12 each year, the General Authority for Roads continues its year-round efforts to remove sand dunes and secure the road network affected by storms in various regions of the Kingdom, with continuous field monitoring by 300 observers to assess road conditions and monitor weather changes to ensure the safety of road users. As part of its endeavor to achieve integration between spending efficiency, enhancing traffic safety, and protecting the environment, the Authority has removed approximately 48.4 million cubic meters of sand from road right-of-ways during the year 2025, effectively contributing to improving maintenance levels and reducing operational risks. The Roads Authority has employed modern technologies in maintenance work, relying on the use of a robot to clean culverts of accumulated mud, sand, and waste. The robot features advanced technical and operational characteristics, most notably its superior ability to work in narrow and low spaces, its zero carbon emissions, and the ability to adjust its height above the ground to efficiently enter culverts with limited heights, thereby reducing the need for human personnel to enter enclosed or hazardous environments. The Authority has recently launched a number of initiatives, in partnership with relevant entities, to utilize the sand adjacent to the road right-of-way, contributing to preserving the safety of road users and enabling vital sectors. The Authority confirmed its continued implementation of many vital projects and initiatives to upgrade the road sector, aiming to achieve the targets of the road sector program to reach the sixth rank in the Global Road Quality Index by 2030, reduce road fatalities to fewer than 5 per 100,000 population, and cover the road network with traffic safety factors according to the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) classification.
