The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture affirmed that afforestation represents one of the effective natural solutions to mitigate the effects of high temperatures during the summer season, highlighting the prominent role of trees in moderating the climate, improving air quality, and enhancing environmental sustainability, in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

The ministry explained that afforestation helps lower temperatures by providing shade and reducing heat absorption in pavements and surfaces, in addition to the transpiration process through which trees release water vapor, helping to cool the surrounding air and improve quality of life in cities, parks, and open spaces.

It added that afforestation provides suitable environments for leisure and outdoor activities, encourages physical activity, and contributes to absorbing up to an average of 150 kg of carbon dioxide annually.

Diverse Environmental and Health Benefits

The ministry pointed out that increasing green spaces has a positive impact on human health by reducing stress and improving mental health, in addition to purifying the air from pollutants, thereby reducing diseases, limiting noise pollution, and contributing to stormwater management and supporting biodiversity by providing habitats for organisms and supporting natural pollinators.

Call to Select Native Trees and Proper Irrigation Practices

The ministry urged community members on the importance of selecting local trees that are most adapted to the Kingdom's climate and require less water, thus enhancing the efficiency of natural resource use and increasing the chances of success and sustainability of afforestation projects.

It also called for following proper agricultural practices to maintain trees during summer, such as choosing the appropriate irrigation timing and using drip irrigation systems that reduce water loss through evaporation by up to 50% compared to traditional systems, in addition to using organic mulch around trees to maintain soil moisture, regulate temperatures, and limit weed growth.

The ministry emphasized that afforestation represents a long-term investment in the environment, people, and the future of coming generations, and also contributes to enhancing the urban landscape and improving quality of life.
