Cultural Anthropology: A Reading of Saudi Society

Cultural anthropology is one of the most important branches of anthropology, as it is concerned with the study of culture as the framework that shapes human life and gives it meaning. It is not limited to documenting customs and traditions, but rather seeks to understand values, beliefs, symbols, and patterns of behavior, how they are formed within society, how they are transmitted between generations, and how they change due to economic, social, and technological transformations. From this perspective, culture is not merely a static heritage that cannot be renewed, but a living system that constantly interacts with changes.

In our beloved homeland, cultural anthropology emerges as a scientific tool for understanding Saudi society in its diversity and unity at the same time. The Kingdom possesses great cultural wealth that reflects the diversity of geographical environments, from coasts to mountains, deserts, and oases, and the resulting diversity in architectural styles, clothing, foods, dialects, folk arts, and social customs. However, this plurality is united by a single national and cultural framework based on Islamic faith, the Arabic language, and national belonging.

Cultural anthropology does not view this diversity as a difference that leads to division, but rather as a source of civilizational richness, revealing society's ability to adapt to its different environments while preserving its unifying identity. Therefore, the study of daily practices, celebrations, hospitality, family relationships, traditional crafts, and oral narratives represents an entry point to understanding the cultural character of Saudi society, not merely a description of its customs.

The importance of this discipline increases in the current phase, with the Kingdom witnessing a broad social and cultural transformation under Saudi Vision 2030, which has given culture and heritage a central role in national development. Documenting tangible and intangible heritage, studying cultural transformations, and analyzing the impact of globalization, technology, and social media on values and lifestyles are all topics at the core of cultural anthropology's interest, and contribute to building more aware and effective cultural policies.

Today, the need is not limited to preserving heritage, but extends to understanding, analyzing, and linking it to the present and future. Here, cultural anthropology plays a strategic role in strengthening national identity, consolidating respect for cultural diversity, and producing scientific knowledge that helps read society objectively, away from stereotypes or preconceptions. Through this understanding, culture becomes a pillar of development and a bridge linking the past to the present, giving society the ability to envision the future without losing its historical roots.
