Kingdom Calls for Accountability of Perpetrators of Sexual Violence in Armed Conflicts
The Kingdom affirmed at the Security Council that sexual violence in armed conflict zones poses a direct threat to international peace and security, stressing the need to hold perpetrators accountable and end impunity.
Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Wasil, the Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, participated in the session discussing this vital issue. Dr. Al-Wasil stressed the utmost importance of strict adherence to international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions to ensure the protection of civilians and facilitate unhindered humanitarian access.
He praised the role of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center in providing vital support to conflict victims, in effective cooperation with specialized international organizations. Al-Wasil pointed to the grave violations committed by the Israeli occupation in the Palestinian territories, including practices of sexual violence, stressing that these acts constitute a blatant violation of international law.
He called for urgent and effective international action to protect civilians, emphasizing that the protection of civilians is a shared responsibility requiring enhanced international cooperation and an immediate response to the suffering of victims.
