The General Authority for Transport announced that the number of public transport passengers in the Kingdom exceeded 420.6 million in 2025, compared to 183.3 million in 2019, a growth rate of 129%, reflecting the rapid expansion of the sector and rising demand for public transport services.

This announcement coincides with the Authority's observance of World Public Transport Day, which falls on April 17 each year, emphasizing the vital role of public transport in enhancing quality of life by facilitating mobility for residents and visitors through comfortable, safe, efficient, and high-quality options, as well as its crucial role in alleviating traffic congestion in cities and governorates and reducing environmental emissions.

The Authority revealed that the growth rate in public transport passengers reached 61% between 2024 and 2025, while the number of users in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 20% compared to the same period last year.

According to a statistical bulletin, the Authority stated that intra-city bus services expanded their operational scope, with public bus services now operating in 17 cities and governorates, up from 4 in 2019. This was achieved by providing buses equipped with the latest technology and safety features, operating on fixed routes and regular schedules, enhancing service reliability and improving connectivity between destinations.

The Authority noted that taxi services and ride-hailing applications witnessed significant growth, with over 377 million trips in the taxi sector between 2019 and 2025, a growth rate of 15%, while ride-hailing applications recorded more than 548 million trips during the same period, an increase of 64%.

The automated people mover at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah recorded notable figures, with over 34 million passengers using it in 2025. Meanwhile, the automated train at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh carried over 3 million passengers in the same year, reflecting growing demand for these transport services due to their ease of movement and service efficiency.
