One of the strong reasons that give the Kingdom's vision fuel for continuity and the ability to implement its strategy as planned is the enlightened and aware consciousness of the essence of rooting, contemporaneity, and building upon them in the movement towards the future.
The Royal Institute of Traditional Arts has issued the Wirth Dictionary of terms for various arts as part of the Ministry of Culture's initiatives and the Quality of Life Program.
The Kingdom abounds with various types of arts that carry all the practices, traditions, and customs of a daily life that practiced its rituals and became an immortal legacy, carrying the factors of its life and cells of renewal.
Believing that traditional crafts and arts are not merely past practices, but are an authentic component of national identity, an important tributary of contemporary culture, and a window through which we view our history, culture, and arts.
Wirth was the national achievement that documented and preserved cultural heritage, with more than 2,000 terms from traditional arts, as a knowledge project that goes beyond the limits of linguistic collection to establish an integrated cultural vision, treating the term as a carrier of memory, a living vessel of accumulated human experience in letters and arts to build a firm national cultural discourse.
The dictionary asserts itself as the fruit of a convergence of three paths: academic knowledge, craft expertise, and field documentation. A trilogy that gave it considerable credibility; it does not merely transmit from written sources but interrogates oral memory and summons the craftsman as a partner in the production of knowledge, not merely its subject.
Traditional arts in their essence are lived knowledge, not reduced to rigid definitions.
The greater bet in this work lies in reviving the term, not merely as a linguistic unit, but as a key to understanding the structure of culture itself. The dictionary proceeds from a deep hypothesis: that the loss of a term means the loss of part of historical consciousness, and that its recovery is a recovery of layers of meaning that were threatened with extinction.
This hypothesis gives the project a civilizational dimension and makes it a tool of resistance against forgetfulness.
On the methodological level, a clear effort appears in regulating terms and classifying them within precise semantic fields, linking them to their functional and cultural contexts. This classification opens a horizon for understanding the interrelationships between crafts, arts, and the social environment.
When tools, professions, arts, costumes, and architecture are included within a single system, it reflects an awareness that traditional culture is an integrated fabric that cannot be dismantled into isolated units.
However, this ambition is not without some critical observations.
The dictionary, in its quest for simplification, sometimes tends to provide brief functional definitions, defining a thing by its use, without sufficient delving into its symbolic or historical dimensions.
Some entries could have benefited from expanding the explanation to include the context of origin, shifts in usage, and the social connotations surrounding the term.
Also, the strong presence of the taxonomic approach, despite its importance, may sometimes lead to a certain rigidity that weakens the flow of reading.
The non-specialist reader may find themselves facing a structure closer to scientific indexing than to living cognitive narrative.
This could have been balanced by introducing explanatory snippets or practical examples that bring the term closer to daily experience. What distinguishes this dictionary is its ability to build a bridge between past and present. It does not treat traditional arts as archaeological relics, but presents them as renewable energy and a knowledge resource that can be invested in education, design, and cultural industries, in line with the major transformations witnessed by contemporary cultural projects, which seek to transform heritage from a display material into an active element in the creative economy.
The dictionary is a first building block in a broader project to root knowledge of traditional arts and build a linguistic and cultural database that can expand and develop.
Its true value lies in laying the foundation, rearranging the relationship between language and heritage, and reminding us that every term is a living trace, carrying within it the story of a community, the voice of a person, and the features of a time.
In this sense, the Wirth Dictionary becomes more than a reference book; it is a cultural declaration of self-recovery through language, and a new awareness that identity is not preserved by slogans, but built with precise words, preserved meanings, and scientific effort that gives heritage another life in the consciousness of the present.
It remains for the Ministry of Culture, in its blessed movement, to take the initiative to establish libraries in every mall, market, and airport to increase knowledge and enrich the mind.
Appreciated efforts by the Ministry of Culture.
