Some 'Exceeded Pumping': 20 Water System Violations in 3 Cities
The Environment, Water and Agriculture Branch in Makkah Region recorded 20 violations in 6 months, including the use of water sources without official licenses and previously drilled wells without a license. The branch called on farmers and well owners to quickly rectify their status before the deadline for obtaining 'use' licenses. Director General of the branch, Engineer Waleed Aal Dughaysh, stated that the violations were distributed among the Holy Capital (Makkah), Al-Jumum, and Jeddah, confirming that monitoring aims to regulate groundwater use and protect water resources and their sustainability. He noted that the most prominent violations include operating wells without a license, operating after the license has expired, changing the use activity, or exceeding the permitted pumping amounts, and that penalties start with a warning and may reach a fine of 150,000 riyals.
