The General Authority for Roads explained the highway numbering system in the Kingdom, noting that it is based on an approved classification that categorizes roads into transverse and longitudinal. This system contributes to road planning, determining their directions and needs, and enhancing connectivity between cities to ensure user safety and provide a distinguished driving experience.

The Authority affirmed that the system includes symbols and numbers that indicate the direction of roads, whether transverse or longitudinal, in addition to the starting and ending points of each road.

It pointed out that transverse roads extend from west to east of the Kingdom, with numbers starting from 10 and increasing in multiples up to 80. Notable examples include Road No. 10, which extends from Al-Darb Governorate to Al-Batha border crossing with the UAE; Road No. 40, from Jeddah to Dammam; and Road No. 80, from Duba Governorate to Jadidat Arar.

The Authority added that longitudinal roads extend from north to south of the Kingdom, with numbers starting from 5 and increasing in multiples up to 95.

Road No. 5, extending from Jazan to Haql; Road No. 15, from Sharurah Governorate to Tabuk; and Road No. 95, from Al-Khobar to Al-Khafji, are among the most prominent of these roads.

The Authority aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the transport sector, improve safety levels and road infrastructure, based on its role in overseeing the road sector.

The Authority also seeks to achieve the targets of the Road Sector Program, which focuses on safety, quality, and alleviating traffic congestion, with the goal of reaching the sixth position globally in the Kingdom's road quality index, while reducing fatalities to fewer than 5 per 100,000 people by 2030.
