(CNN)-- The US military has begun a second wave of strikes on Iran, following attacks that occurred early Wednesday morning and targeted an island near the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated in a post on platform 'X' (formerly Twitter) that the new strikes focused on 'Iranian military capabilities used to threaten ships transiting freely through the Strait of Hormuz.'

The statement did not specify the geographical location of those strikes.

The post added that 'the US military is holding Iran accountable under the direction of the commander-in-chief.'

In response, Iranian media reported hearing explosions in the cities of Ahvaz and Chabahar, located in the south of the country.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting reported that families and patients were temporarily evacuated from the building of 'Shahid Beqaei' Hospital in Ahvaz - a facility specialized in the care and treatment of children with cancer - after 'a projectile resulting from a US strike fell near the site.'

The broadcaster quoted the Deputy Governor of Khuzestan for Security and Law Enforcement Affairs, Waliollah Hayati, as saying that the strike 'caused damage to neighboring homes and shattered windows in some residential units.'

Earlier on Wednesday, US forces launched a wave of attacks lasting 90 minutes on the island of 'Greater Tunb.'

Sources at CNN had highlighted in March the strategic importance of several islands, including 'Greater Tunb,' which is part of what one researcher described as Iran's 'arc of defense.'
