A viral video in Egypt sparked widespread controversy and criticism on social media, after it showed two girls using drugs in a street in broad daylight.
The clip caused shock among viewers, who condemned the girls' public drug use, especially since their appearance did not suggest they were drug users — they looked normal, which increased the surprise and outrage. Many also expressed shock that such behavior occurred in the street and in front of passersby.
In response, the Ministry of Interior issued a statement on Monday evening regarding the incident, announcing the apprehension of the two girls who appeared in the video.
The ministry said that after examination, the motorcycle seen in the video was identified and seized, and it was found to be properly licensed and owned by one of the girls. It also turned out that they reside in Alexandria Governorate.
The statement added that when confronted, the two girls confessed to committing the incident as shown in the video, on July 11 of this month, while they were in a residential complex within the jurisdiction of the Sidi Gaber police station.
They also confessed to obtaining the drugs from an unemployed man, who was found to have a criminal record and used a motorcycle without license plates to promote and sell drugs.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that the aforementioned suspect was arrested, and a quantity of hashish was found in his possession. When confronted, he confessed to possessing the drugs with the intent to traffic.
The two motorcycles were also seized, and the necessary legal measures were taken against the accused.
