The US military announced early Sunday morning launching new airstrikes in response to Iranian attacks against its forces in Jordan that resulted in the death of two American soldiers, for the first time since the renewal of hostilities with Tehran.

A statement from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes aim to 'degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and immediately punish the Revolutionary Guard forces for the attacks they launched against US service members in Jordan last night.'

It also clarified the conclusion of the eighth consecutive wave of strikes on Iran, targeting Iranian coastal surveillance and military air defense facilities.

Today at 6 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began launching new airstrikes against Iran at the Commander in Chief’s direction. CENTCOM said: 'We completed another wave of attacks on Iran on July 18 at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time.'

In a statement on platform X, CENTCOM said: 'During the eighth consecutive night of US strikes, CENTCOM forces successfully targeted coastal surveillance points and air defense installations of the Iranian military, in addition to naval capabilities and missile and drone storage sites, as part of ongoing efforts to degrade Iranian military capabilities.'

The US Central Command clarified in a statement published on its X account: 'We targeted the Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces that launched attacks on US soldiers in Jordan on July 17.'

Earlier, CENTCOM had announced the start of a new round (the eighth) of airstrikes against Iran, confirming that operations began at 6 a.m. Eastern Time.

The command said in a statement that the strikes aim to degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, along with delivering an immediate response to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard following the attack that targeted US forces in Jordan last night.

Before that, the US Central Command announced on Saturday the death of two US service members and the loss of another due to Iranian strikes on Jordan, amid the exchange of attacks between Washington and Tehran.

CENTCOM stated in a post on platform X: 'Two US service members were killed in Jordan while performing their duties, during the repelling by US Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces of attacks launched by Iran using ballistic missiles and drones.'

It added: 'One service member remains missing.'

Iran launched more attacks yesterday on Gulf countries and Jordan, while Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei threatened in a written message to teach the United States 'unforgettable lessons', asserting that US President Donald Trump's signature is 'worthless and void'.

It is noteworthy that the interim agreement reached last month to end the war collapsed since July 7, when Tehran targeted ships in the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States responded by carrying out airstrikes on Iran.

Since then, Tehran has announced the closure of the strait, while Washington has reimposed its blockade on Iranian ports.
