The new director of the Israeli intelligence agency (Mossad), Roman Gofman, visited Washington, where he held talks with CIA Director John Ratcliffe and White House officials, discussing the war with Iran and developments in its nuclear program, according to what Axios reported citing two informed sources on Wednesday.

According to the report, the visit, which took place two weeks ago, was Gofman's first to the United States since he became head of Mossad last June, and it came before tensions escalated again in the Strait of Hormuz and the resumption of fighting in the region.

An Israeli source told the website that one of the main goals of the visit was to coordinate positions with the administration of US President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing negotiations with Iran on a new nuclear deal.

The report noted that Gofman, who is described as one of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's closest advisers, met with CIA Director John Ratcliffe, as well as White House officials, to discuss regional developments and the prospects of the diplomatic track with Tehran.

It added that Ratcliffe was one of the most skeptical voices within Trump's inner circle regarding the memorandum of understanding with Iran, warning before its signing that Tehran might interpret the agreement's clauses differently from the American interpretation, including clauses related to the Strait of Hormuz.
