Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his Emirati counterpart Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed on Sunday in El Alamein, northern Egypt, developments in regional situations and ways to de-escalate in the region amid the escalating military confrontation between the United States and Iran.

That came as Sisi received his Emirati counterpart at El Alamein Airport at the start of a 'brotherly visit' of unspecified duration by the latter to Egypt, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

The two presidents discussed the overall bilateral relations, as well as developments in regional and international issues of common interest, particularly the developments in the Middle East region and efforts to avoid further escalation, according to the presidency statement.

It was emphasized on the need to 'continue consultation, coordination and joint work on various issues in light of the existing challenges facing the region.'

The meeting comes as the region witnesses an escalation in the military confrontation between the United States and Iran, after the two sides exchanged military strikes in the past hours, while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime navigation until further notice, due to what it described as 'security instability resulting from foreign interference.'
