Iranian Revolutionary Guard Announces Closure of Strait of Hormuz After Ship Targeting Incident
The navy of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it has decided to close the Strait of Hormuz until further notice, following an incident in which a ship was targeted after attempting to sail through unauthorized routes and ignoring security warnings.
The Iranian navy stated that it had previously warned against foreign interference and the imposition of illegal routes for ship traffic in the strait, stressing that such interference leads to disruption of maritime navigation.
It added that a number of ships, instigated by foreign parties, deliberately ignored instructions and turned off their identification and navigation systems, prompting forces to fire warning shots and stop one of these ships to maintain maritime security.
For its part, the Iranian navy held the American and Israeli forces fully responsible for the consequences of what it described as illegal interference.
