Kuwait and Protecting Children from Social Media
In a positive step to regulate the lifestyle of children and adolescents and protect them from the traps of social media, which negatively affect their mentality, behavior, and personalities, the UAE has banned these platforms for this age group. Undoubtedly, it is worth implementing this step in our country, given the difficulty of controlling the content being broadcast and its promoters. After Al-Qabas published an investigation recently, in which it presented the opinions of experts and specialists on the most prominent problems and their solutions, a point not to be overlooked emerges: that children of this era are not like previous ones, especially in technical matters. Therefore, to limit manipulation and fraud—whether by children or their guardians—if the proposal is implemented, these sites must be linked to the civil ID and government identities to ensure the desired goals are achieved.
In the context of the UAE, we recall its role in resolving the issue of the legal discrepancy regarding the age of majority, which still persists in Kuwait. We previously raised this matter with specialists in Al-Qabas in an article titled 'To the Ministry of Justice with Greetings.' The problem lies in reaching majority 'civilly' at age 21, while criminal majority is at 18, in addition to the permissible marriage age in the Personal Status Law being the same age, which allows a minor to become a father to a child. This opens the door to limitations in civil transactions for a 20-year-old husband—the head of a small family—according to civil law that restricts his actions without a guardian, along with other negative consequences for youth and families. We highlight the role of regional countries in presenting and resolving the problem, and we call for unifying the age locally and reducing it in personal status, civil, and penal laws.
